Margarita 5k

I recently participated in the Margarita 5K in Mission Beach and it was definitely a blast!  I used a coupon code for this race so I paid around $28 for this event.  Packet pick-up was the day before at Movin Shoes in Pacific Beach.  It’s a tiny store, so I was in and out pretty fast.  Here I picked up my bib number, swag bag and tshirt.  They were also offering a discount on merchandise purchased at Movin Shoes that day.

Race day parking was simple – there were a ton of open spots up close to where the event was held.  The race itself was pretty small – probably around 200 people – so it definitely wasn’t crowded at all.  Since this was a beach event, it started at 7:30am in order to catch low tide.  There was a lot of energy prior to the race start, including a Zumba instructor getting the crowd warmed up with some dancing and fun music.  The early start time combined with the previous day’s rain made it a nice and fairly cool run.  I also did this chip-timed run with a few of my Stroller Warrior friends which made the day even more enjoyable.

The race course was on the flat, packed sand and there was water/Gatorade at the halfway point.

At the finish line we received our medals and were offered water and snacks.

There were a few vendors at the event and we were required to get their signatures on our bibs in order to be entered into a raffle.  Race times were posted pretty quickly and awards went out to the first place winners of each age category.  There was also a DJ pumping music and keeping the party going.  Besides the Color Run, I would say this is the most energy I have seen at a race in quite some time.

So what was the SWAG?!

IMG_3283IMG_4305

  • The vendors all gave out a few coupons, but nothing crazy
  • A nice medal (although no date or location)
  • A tank top – I do prefer tanks over tshirts, although these seemed to run kind of big as if they were men’s sizes.
  • Orgain protein powder
  • Bear Naked granola
  • Vegan Perfect bar
  • More coupons
  • And most importantly…A coupon for a free margarita from Café Coyote! Yippee!  I hold a special place in my heart for margaritas, so the free margarita is what first drew me to the race.  The only downfall was that the restaurant offering the free margarita was located in another part of town about 10 minutes away.
  • Beautiful beach scenery

Overall, I really enjoyed this race and found the volunteers and race director to be friendly and generous.  Besides the obvious free margarita, it was fun to run a race on the beach in beautiful weather (although the water was a bit cold.) I do have a few suggestions:

  1. Add the date and/or location to the finisher medal
  2. Offer the free margaritas immediately after the race or from a restaurant that is within walking distance of the event
  3. Either offer women’s and men’s sizes in tanks or inform participants that they run big

But I really did enjoy this event and I hope to see this race grow in the future!  See you at the next event!

The Super (Hero) Run

Last month, I ran the Super Run in downtown San Diego.  I learned about the run through Living Social so I only paid about $15 for this run.  It was advertised as a family friendly fun run with a scenic course along the Marina district and Seaport Village in downtown San Diego. Costumes were encouraged and the event benefitted the Down Syndrome Association of San Diego.

Packet pick-up was the day before at Road Runner Sports.  I was unable to attend, but I heard it was pretty chaotic with long lines and disorganization.  Parking the day of the race was a bit tricky because downtown parking is always a pain; however, I know of a secret parking lot so that made things a lot easier. 😉  I ran this race with my 3-year-old daughter and my friends from my Stroller Warriors group.  Fun runs are always way better when you do them with friends.  It was a pretty crowded event on a narrow pathway, so passing people was not easy!

This was not a timed event, which was a good thing because there were times that you were forced to walk due to the large crowds in the small areas.  I even saw a couple holding hands while walking during the race, so I would not consider this a competitive event by any means.

It definitely was an excuse to dress up like a super hero and walk/jog with some family and friends.  Since I had to walk during many parts of the run, I was able to take lots of pics!  It was a gorgeous day and there was lots of beautiful scenery so get ready for photo overload!!!

There were lots of signs throughout the course directing us to the right path and also some friendly and enthusiastic volunteers cheering us on along the way.  After the run, we snagged our medals and met up with the other ladies and kiddos from our group.  We headed over to the vendor area where there was a big bounce house for the kids to jump around and let out some more energy.  There was also a DJ that played fun music and tried to keep with energy going, but I never really saw anyone on the dance floor.  These poor 5k DJ’s just don’t seem to get any love. 😦

I almost forgot to mention my favorite part of the race…and that was getting to wear these dope socks!!

Overall, this was definitely a FUN run and I would do it again with my kids and friends!  I do wish that it had been a bit more organized and maybe on a wider course, but it wasn’t bad for the price.  So what was the SWAG?!

Target Beauty Box – March

I always love beauty samples! So here is a look at what was inside of Target’s March beauty box.  Yeah, yeah, it’s April….but ya know…whatevs.  And again, you have to act fast on these!  They normally sell out within hours!

blog target

Caress body wash – Adore Forever – This is a fragrance filled body wash that guarantees to have a long-lasting scent.  It’s sort of a sweet and exotic scent which is quite pleasant – it was reminiscent of being on a tropical island.  However, the scent really does last a loooong time and almost become overwhelming.  It was just a bit too strong for me.  I really wanted the honeymoon to be over.

Hair Food moisture shampoo and conditioner – This also had a sweet exotic scent to it, but not nearly as overwhelming.  It is silicone free, paraben free and mineral oil free.  I really did feel that my hair was softer after using these products so it is something I would consider purchasing in the future.

Laneige water sleeping mask – This was a bit slimy for me and you are supposed to rub it on your face, go to sleep, and then wash it off in the morning.  I’m not really a fan of sleeping with something on my face – I don’t know why – but it just really bothers me…so probably not something I would use regularly.

Nugg anti-aging face mask – I really liked the texture and delicate scent of this mask.  I also like that they come in little pods and you only have to leave it on for a few minutes at a time.  I will probably use this sometime in the future.

Sinful Colors nail polish in Poisonberry – The color was a bit too dark for me, but my 3 year old loved it for her toes and it did last almost a week.  This is a pretty inexpensive brand (about $2 a bottle), so I would try this item again but in a lighter color.

Banana Boat sunscreen in SPF 30 – I used this while running and felt that it did its job.  No sunburn and the scent was pretty subtle.  I try to stick with natural or organic sunscreens, so I most likely would not use this product again.

Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Sea Salt Spray – I really wanted to love this, but it didn’t do a whole lot for my hair.  Probably because I already have wavy – curlyish hair.  But it did smell beachy and island-y which I liked. It’s also retails at Target at less than $5 a bottle (8 oz) so it’s definitely a good deal if it works for your hair type.

You are Amazing juicy grapefruit lotion – I really enjoyed this lotion.  It wasn’t too heavy, has a great scent and is paraben-free.  It also retails at Target for about $4 a bottle (8oz) which pretty much rocks, so I can see this lotion in my future!

The beauty box also includes a coupon for $3 off of a $15 beauty purchase which is super awesome because I never turn down a good coupon!

Overall, I really liked all of the samples and can’t wait to see what will be in next month’s box!  Hopefully you were able to snag one, too!
